Choosing a Powder Supplement Manufacturer? Here’s What Sets NutraStar Apart

Choosing a powder supplement manufacturer determines your launch timeline, your cost structure, and your regulatory exposure, because the FDA holds the brand owner responsible for compliance under 21 CFR Part 111, not just the factory. NutraStar manufactures custom powder supplements for brand owners who need that decision to hold up under scrutiny, not just look good on a quote.

Powder is also where the category is moving. It was the fastest-growing supplement delivery format in 2025, up 11% year over year, and it’s increasingly favored by younger buyers: 53% of Gen Z use powder-format supplements, compared with 10% of Boomers. If you’re building or scaling a powder line, here’s how NutraStar approaches the criteria that matter most.

1. GMP certified vs. GMP compliant

Every manufacturer will tell you they’re “GMP compliant.” That’s a self-declared status. GMP certified means a third party, such as NSF, NPA/UL, USP, or Intertek, has audited the facility against 21 CFR Part 111 and confirmed it, typically on an annual renewal cycle.

Because compliance liability sits with you as the label holder even when we run the blend, we provide a certificate of analysis (COA) on request for every batch, with full raw material traceability built into our quality assurance process. Ask us for the certification documentation directly. We’d rather you verify it than take our word for it.

2. Minimum order quantities, by format

MOQs vary by format:

  • Powder tubs typically carry lower per-unit MOQs than single-serve formats.
  • Stick packs and sachets carry higher MOQs due to added packaging line complexity.
  • Because every NutraStar formula is custom, MOQs also reflect the raw materials, flavor development, and pilot batching your specific formula requires.

NutraStar’s current MOQs run 5,000 units for standard powder formats. See our MOQ and pricing page for current figures by format. If your timeline or order size is tight, talk to our team before you assume you don’t fit. We can usually tell you within a day whether your target volume is workable.

3. Why custom formulation

NutraStar builds formulas around your brand, not a shared stock recipe. That’s a deliberate choice, not a limitation: it means the formula, and what you can claim about it, belongs to you.

Custom Formulation (NutraStar)
Typical timeline10-12 weeks
Upfront investmentHigher than a stock formula, reflecting R&D and pilot batching
IP / differentiationFormula developed with your team, owned by you
Best forBrands that want a defensible, differentiated product from day one

Our R&D and formulation team works from your target claims, budget, and category benchmarks to build a formula, then moves it through pilot batching and stability testing before scaling to production.

4. Why powder specifically

Powder isn’t just capsule filling with looser tolerances. It’s a format we run at scale, not an occasional line item:

  • Ingredient loading. Powder allows higher active ingredient concentrations per serving than capsules. This matters for protein, greens, and creatine formulas where therapeutic-level dosing in capsule form would mean swallowing a dozen pills.
  • Flowability and particle size. These affect blend uniformity and how the product mixes in liquid. Our production team evaluates both during formulation, not after a customer complaint.
  • Cost per serving. Powder is generally more cost-effective to manufacture and ship than gummies, which matters for your margins as you scale.

NutraStar currently runs active production in protein, greens, creatine, colostrum, and electrolyte/hydration powders, the sub-categories seeing the strongest 2026 demand growth. See our manufacturing capabilities page for the full list of formats and categories we run. If your formula falls outside that list, ask us directly. We’ll tell you plainly whether it’s a fit.

Neither of these is settled law as of this writing. We’d rather flag what’s still moving than present it as more certain than it is.

If you’re comparing manufacturers

A short list of what to ask any partner, including us:

  • Certifying body and most recent audit date
  • Actual MOQ, in writing, by format
  • Typical lead time from approved formulation to first production run
  • COA availability and batch/lot testing protocol
  • Active production experience in your specific powder sub-category
  • How they’ve handled a recent regulatory or labeling change

If your timeline is tight or you’re mid-search, we’re happy to walk your team through NutraStar’s formulation process, current MOQs, and lead times for your category.
